Hotel Housekeeping Checklist: Room-by-Room, Printable

Every step of a room turnover, grouped the way housekeeping actually works — stayover vs checkout, a deep-clean schedule, and public areas — formatted to print cleanly on one page.

What's on a Hotel Housekeeping Checklist?

A hotel housekeeping checklist is the step-by-step task list a housekeeper follows to turn a room: a pre-entry check, strip and air, bathroom, bed making, dusting, restocking, floors, final inspection, and updating the room's status so it can be sold again.

The Full Room Turnover Checklist

Work through these nine stages in order for a complete checkout clean. For a lighter stayover clean, see the shorter list below.

1. Before Entering the Room

  • Check the room's status on the board or PMS — confirm it is assigned to your shift and not showing occupied.
  • Knock and announce "Housekeeping," then wait several seconds for a response.
  • Check for a physical or digital Do Not Disturb (DND) flag — if present, skip the room and log it to revisit later in the shift.
  • If there's no response, knock again, then enter with your key, announcing as you open the door.
  • Prop the door open and position your cart to block the entry, signalling the room is being cleaned.

2. Strip & Air

  • Open curtains and a window if available, and let the room air while you work.
  • Strip all bed linen, pillowcases and bathroom towels; check inside the sheets for guest items left behind.
  • Empty every trash bin and replace the liners.
  • Collect used glassware, cups and consumed amenities for replacement.
  • Check under the bed and inside drawers for forgotten belongings; log anything found as lost and found per your property's procedure.

3. Bathroom

  • Remove used towels and the bath mat; replace with fresh ones to your property's par stock.
  • Clean and disinfect the toilet bowl, seat and base.
  • Scrub the tub or shower, glass or curtain, and fixtures; remove hair and soap residue.
  • Wipe the sink, counter and mirror until streak-free.
  • Restock soap, shampoo, toilet paper (including a spare roll) and tissues.
  • Empty and wipe the bathroom bin and replace the liner.
  • Mop the bathroom floor last, after everything else is done.

4. Bedroom & Bed Making

  • Inspect the mattress and pillows for stains or damage; flag for maintenance or replacement if needed.
  • Make the bed with fresh linen to your property's standard fold and pillow arrangement.
  • Fluff and arrange pillows and any decorative cushions or bed runner.
  • Check bedside lamps, the alarm clock, and outlets or USB ports work.

5. Dusting & Surfaces

  • Dust every hard surface top to bottom: headboard, nightstands, dresser, TV, picture frames, light fixtures and vents.
  • Wipe down the closet, drawer interiors, and all door and cabinet handles.
  • Clean windows and mirrors, and wipe window sills.
  • Check and clean the AC or heater unit and vents for dust buildup.

6. Amenities & Minibar Restock

  • Restock welcome amenities, stationery and the guest directory or compendium.
  • Restock the minibar to par level, check expiry dates, and note any consumed items for guest billing.
  • Wipe down the minibar fridge, inside and out.
  • Check the coffee or tea station; restock cups and sachets, and confirm the kettle is clean.

7. Floors

  • Vacuum carpets, including under the bed and furniture wherever you can reach.
  • Sweep and mop hard floors.
  • Check corners and baseboards for dust buildup.

8. Final Inspection

  • Walk the room against your property's inspection checklist, or have a supervisor do so.
  • Test the lights, TV and remote, AC or heater, safe, and every door lock.
  • Confirm no maintenance issues remain outstanding, or log any you find.
  • Check the room is odor-neutral or matches your brand's scent standard.
  • Close curtains to the property's standard display position and turn off unneeded lights.

9. Update Room Status

  • Mark the room clean in your PMS or status board — moving it from vacant dirty to vacant clean, or straight to inspected if a supervisor also checks it. See the full hotel room status codes reference for what every code means. A room that looks finished but is never updated in the system still can't be sold.

What Is the Difference Between a Stayover and a Checkout Clean?

A stayover clean services a room where the guest is still in residence and keeps their belongings in place — it's a lighter pass, not the full nine-stage checklist above. A checkout clean resets a vacated room for the next arrival and runs every stage in full, including a complete linen change and a final inspection, which is why it takes meaningfully longer. Use the two shorter lists below for the quick version of each.

Stayover (Occupied) Clean — Quick List

  • Confirm there's no DND flag before entering.
  • Make the bed; change linen only per your reuse policy or guest request.
  • Empty trash; replace towels per the guest's visible preference or property default.
  • Restock amenities used; wipe down bathroom surfaces.
  • Quick dust and tidy of visible surfaces; vacuum high-traffic areas only.
  • Leave the guest's belongings exactly as found.

Departure (Checkout) Clean — Quick List

  • Full strip of all linen and towels.
  • Full bathroom clean and disinfect.
  • Full restock to 100% par — minibar, amenities, stationery.
  • Full dust, vacuum or mop, and inspection — nothing skipped.
  • Check for left-behind items; log to lost and found.
  • Update status from vacant dirty through to inspected for resale.

How Long Should It Take to Clean a Hotel Room?

Industry figures from ICW Group's hotel and motel housekeeper data put a stayover clean at around 20.5 minutes and a checkout clean at around 31.5 minutes — more than 30% longer, which matches the extra work in the full checklist above versus the stayover quick list.

Treat those numbers as a planning baseline, not a fixed target for every room. Actual time varies with room and suite size, how high your property sets its cleaning standard, and whether a room needs extra attention (a stain, a maintenance flag, a longer stay's buildup of clutter). A housekeeper consistently running well outside either figure on ordinary rooms is a signal to check workflow, not necessarily effort.

How Many Rooms Can a Housekeeper Clean Per Shift?

Working from the ICW Group timings above, eight hours of pure cleaning time covers roughly 15 checkout rooms (480 ÷ 31.5) or 23 stayover rooms (480 ÷ 20.5). Breaks, cart restocking and walking between rooms bring real shifts below those ceilings, and the biggest factor behind where a given shift lands is the mix of checkout versus stayover rooms, since a checkout clean simply takes longer; room size, property class and how efficiently the floor is organized matter too, but less than that mix.

This is also why a fixed room quota applied uniformly across a day is a common scheduling mistake. A housekeeper assigned entirely checkout rooms will finish fewer of them than a colleague assigned mostly stayovers, for identical effort — which is a workload-fairness problem worth solving before it becomes a staffing one.

Deep-Clean Schedule: Beyond the Daily Checklist

Tasks that keep a room from degrading between renovations, layered on top of the daily checklist.

Frequency Tasks
Weekly Flip or rotate the mattress where applicable, clean behind and under furniture, spot-check curtains, descale the kettle or coffee maker, deep-clean bathroom grout and drains.
Monthly Full carpet shampoo or extraction in high-traffic rooms, clean AC/heater filters and vents, wipe inside window glass and tracks, inspect and clean light fixtures and ceiling fans.
Quarterly Full curtain and drape laundering, mattress and pillow deep sanitation or rotation, deep-clean upholstery, touch-up scuffed walls, full inventory audit of linen and amenity stock.

Public Areas Daily Checklist

What housekeeping covers outside the guest rooms, every day.

  • Lobby floors vacuumed or mopped; entrance glass cleaned.
  • Reception desk and public seating wiped down.
  • Public restrooms checked and restocked through the day, fully cleaned at least once.
  • Elevator interiors wiped and buttons disinfected.
  • Corridors vacuumed or mopped; handrails and door handles disinfected.
  • Trash bins in public areas emptied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hotel housekeeping checklist?

A hotel housekeeping checklist is the fixed sequence of tasks a housekeeper works through to turn a room over, from the pre-entry status check through stripping, cleaning, restocking and final inspection, so every room meets the same standard regardless of who cleaned it or how busy the shift was.

What is the difference between a stayover and a checkout clean?

A stayover clean services an occupied room while the guest keeps their belongings in place, lighter service covering the bed, trash, towels and a quick tidy. A checkout clean resets a vacated room for the next guest and covers every item on the full checklist, including a full linen change, complete restock and final inspection, which is why it takes meaningfully longer.

How long should it take to clean a hotel room?

Industry data from ICW Group puts a stayover clean at around 20.5 minutes and a checkout clean at around 31.5 minutes, more than 30% longer. Actual time still varies with room size, property class and how thorough the turnover standard is, so treat these as a planning baseline rather than a fixed target for every room.

How many rooms can a housekeeper clean per shift?

Using ICW Group's timings of 20.5 minutes per stayover and 31.5 minutes per checkout, eight hours of pure cleaning time covers roughly 15 checkout rooms or 23 stayover rooms; breaks, cart restocking and walking between rooms bring real shifts below that. The mix of checkout versus stayover rooms on a given day is the single biggest factor in where a shift lands in that range.

What should be checked before entering a guest room?

Confirm the room's status on the board or PMS, knock and announce yourself, check for a Do Not Disturb sign or digital DND flag, and wait for a response before using your key. Skipping the status check is the most common cause of a housekeeper walking into an occupied room by mistake.

How often should a hotel deep-clean a room beyond the daily checklist?

Most properties layer deep-clean tasks on a weekly, monthly and quarterly cycle on top of the daily checklist: things like mattress rotation and grout cleaning weekly, carpet extraction and filter cleaning monthly, and curtain laundering or upholstery deep-cleaning quarterly. The daily checklist keeps a room sellable; the deep-clean schedule keeps it from degrading between renovations.

What is the last step before a room can be sold to the next guest?

The room status has to be updated from vacant dirty to vacant clean, or to inspected if a supervisor also checks it, before the front desk can assign it to an arriving guest. A room that looks finished but is never marked clean in the system is still unsellable.

Can I print this housekeeping checklist?

Yes. Use your browser's print function, Ctrl+P or Cmd+P. The page is formatted to print cleanly without the navigation, footer or buttons, leaving just the checklist itself.
